MILAN CRICKET CLUB
An absolutely outstanding beautiful August day in the sunshine, with good company ,was spoilt somewhat by some appalling cricket. Strasbourg were slightly less appalling than us and ran out worthy winners by 5 wickets in a very low scoring game.
Milan won the toss and batted and struggled to a lame 44 in a painstaking 25 overs. Admittedly the grass was long but only 1 boundary was scored by Milan which was from our youngest player, 13 year old Jack Ross-Gower making his full debut for the club.(a fine pull shot that he cant have learnt from any of us) Nand top scored with 17 and Ross senior looked well set on 8 until ''suspiciously'' given run out. It was never going to be enough but we helped Strasbourg along with some dropped catches most notably by John ''oh shit'' Vernede who will add much to the glamour and colour of the team with his on the field antics and cursing! 2 items certainly to cheer about in the field though. Miles managed to get a stumping to his name with some fine keeping by Ross but best of all was the fine bowling by Jack. 3.3 overs 1/6. He bowled mostly good line and length and turned the ball prodigiously (tku spell check). The batsmen were not doing him any favours, this was a genuine good bowling performance. More ''suspicious'' umpiring robbed him of a further lbw that even David Sweetman would have given! We had a great dinner afterwards in Lodi where wine was given out by the generous President and I had the pleasure of awarding one to my son for his performance. Fortunately, the oppo' gave him a bottle too so I wont go thirsty for a while!
A much improved Milan team, both in terms of players and playing saw us comfortably beat Strasbourg by 5 wickets. Strasbourg batted first and apart from a middle order thrash never really got going and only posted 98. Yet again some suspicious umpiring for a stumping claim that was turned down, despite the fact we had put the bails back on before the batman made his ground, aided this effort but it was all in vain. We used 7 bowlers with our skipper Nand taking 2/15 and Nashir 2/23 being the best of the bunch. Yet again some sharper fielding could have some better figures for most of the bowlers. John ''OS'' Vernede and Shantah both ruining Jacks 0/23 figures which could easily have been 2/15 ! (note to all - If I write the reports and you drop anything off Jack's bowling it will get mentioned) With a top order of Ramesh Ashoka Nashir and Shantah the 98 total was never going to be enough and we coasted it in the end. Nashir being the pick of the batmen with a restrained 27 not out.
Both games this weekend were played in a tremendous spirit and in beautiful weather. Miles and Ross proved their real worth to the club by acquiring a slab of cold beer in the afternoon from a local bar. At the end all honours were even but I cant finish without mentioning one more thing. (you know what is coming Miles).
During this match there was a shot that went down towards 3rd man which Miles reluctantly had to chase from backward pointish. We could here him shouting at the ball to go over the line but best of all was the shout of ''save the 5 Miles'' from one of the younger members of the team who shall remain nameless.
Hope that will do for the year book men. I have the almost full scorecards here if you need them.
